****IN LOVING MEMORY****

Mary Isabell (Cook) King, of Chariton, was born September 8, 1925, in Chariton, Iowa to William Leslie and Florence Anne (Smith) Cook.

She passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

She was 84 years old.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Klyle King on April 7, 1945, and to this union five children were born.

They are son, Kenny (Brenda) King of Pleasant Hill; four daughters, Ruthie (Lonnie) Sims of Chariton, June King of Chariton, Rita Oetker of Des Moines, and Shirley (John) Cavanaugh of Runnells.

Kenneth and Mary Lived in Arizona in the early years of marriage and returned to farm near Melrose, Iowa.

They lived in Chariton and Russell area during the rest of their 49-year marriage where Kenneth was a concrete contractor.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, providing care for her many grandchildren throughout the years and a listening ear for anyone in need of comfort and companionship.

Mary was a stay-at-home mom that did a lot of gardening and canning of the foods she raised to provide for the family.

There was always a home-cooked meal on the table for family and anyone else that dropped in to join us.

Mary traveled some with Kenneth to various fishing vacations sometimes taking along a grandchild or two.

She always enjoyed picnics with the family; and one was held in her honor every Mother's Day (rain or shine) where we usually finished off the mushroom hunting season.

Family reunions were also important to her, and she would be so proud when all of "her" children were there.

She is survived by her children, and their spouses, 13 grandchildren, and 18great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by one brother, Dale Cook (Barb) of Sac City; and four sisters, Thelma Egbert of Des Moines, Ruby Walker of Knoxville, Vera (Clarence) Walker of Pharr, Texas; Sharon (Jim) Ester of Dexter; and her sisters-in-law, Florence Cook (Howard) of Ankeny, Ruth King (Ernie) of Des Moines, Bernice King of Chariton, and Ethel Fenton (Dwight) of Fremont, NE, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, brothers bill, George and Howard, her sister, Wilma; and her great-granddaughter, Jordyn Nicole Thompson.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, with Pastor Joe Allwood officiating.

Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Chariton Humane Society and the Susan R. Tuttle Dialysis Center in Corydon, Iowa.
