He was a Reverend and married Nancy Araminta Hastings in 1892.

--

Rev. O. S. Gard was kicked in the temple by a horse while himself and wife were preparing winter garden near the house at about eleven o'clock Saturday morning, September 7, 1912. [A detailed description of the accident is available at the source.]

Orlando Silas Gard was born April 7, 1867, at Wakefield, Richland county, Illinois. He resided in Wakefield until entering Northwestern University at Evanston, August, 1892. In 1899 he graduated from Garrett Biblical Institute.

On December 31st, 1891, he was joined in wedlock with Nancy A. Hastings at Ingraham, Clay county, Ill. Rev. Gard was a member of Rock River Conference in Illinois for six years and at the time of death was a member of the Colorado conference.

In October, 1907, he came to Lindsay and served as pastor of the First M. E. Church. Rev. Gard loved the ministry and his heart was in it but he was obliged to give it up on account of poor health. He had been living for sometime on his forty acre ranch three miles south and east of Lindsay. A short time ago he told his wife that he hoped he would be able to take up again some kind of religious work as that was the work to which he was called. Rev. Gard was a man everyone respected, he being square and honest with his fellowmen and a blessing to humanity. His life was a living example of what he preached and the church and community at large will miss him greatly.

Deceased is survived by a wife, brother Ben J. Gard of Fresno and sister, Mrs. J. F. Hall of Lindsay. The funeral was from the Methodist church at two thirty o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Stead of Porterville conducted the services assisted by the local ministers. A large audience was in attendance to pay respect to the dead and to the bereaved.

After looking for the last time upon the face of one whom they had learned to love the audience turned away and the funeral cortege wended its way to Olive cemetery where the last sad rites over the remains of Rev. Orlando S. Gard were performed. He sleeps to awaken on the resurrection day as his life was the life of a Christian man. -Lindsay, Cal. Gazette.

Rev. Gard was for two years pastor of the Methodist church of Holyoke and was held in the highest esteem by all. He and his worthy wife left a host of friends in Holyoke who highly esteemed him for his Christain manhood and exemplary life and deeply sympathize with Mrs. Gard in her sorrow.
