Enlisted on November 15, 1861 at McMinnville, Tennessee for 3 years in the 84th Tennessee which became the 28th Tennessee infantry. He was listed as AWOL on January 25, 1863 and returned to his unit on February 6, 1863. He was later promoted to Orderly Sgt. of Company F.
Mortally wounded on November 30, 1864, he was captured on December 17, 1864 and died in a Franklin Confederate Hospital on January 1, 1865. He left a wife and 4 children (3 sons and 1 daughter).

Company F. 28th Tennessee Infantry. In a letter to George Cohen, John B Shrader wrote to explain that he and his wife had visited the cemetery and found the grave stone was incorrectly engraved with intials W. L. B..
