Herbert A. Nathan Is Dead From Appendicitis Attack. Prominent Merchant of Great Falls Succumbs

Herbert A. Nathan, son of the late A. Nathan, pioneer merchant of Montana, died Friday afternoon at the Columbus hospital following an operation for appendicitis Tuesday night. Mr. Nathan was 41 years old and a native of Montana. He was born at Fort Benton Jan 2, 1886, and when slightly more than one year, he moved to Great Falls with his parents, where he grew to manhood and later became one of the city's leading merchants.

Mr. Nathan was taken ill Sunday but did not summon medical attention until Monday. Mrs. Nathan and two children were absent from the city at the time, having gone to Long Beach, Calif., a few weeks ago to spend the summer. They arrived here Friday afternoon accompanied by Mrs. Nathan's mother, Mrs. Harry Bloch of San Francisco.

With the exception of a few years spent in the east while attending the Peekskill Military academy at Peekskill, N. Y., Mr. Nathan spent virtually all his life here. After completing his academy course he entered the business which his father had established when Great Falls was founded, a business which in the last four decades has ranked as one of the leading mercantile houses of the city.

Mr. Nathan was married to Miss Elise Bloch of San Francisco Oct 18, 1916, and to them two children were born, a daughter, Margaret, aged 10, and a son, Edward, aged 7. Besides the widow and two children, Mr. Nathan is survived by his mother, Mrs. A. Nathan, and one brother, Robert A Nathan, both of Great Falls, and by an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Mose Kaufman and three cousins, Joseph, Fred and Ira Kaufman, all who reside in Great Falls.

Mr. Nathan was a charter member of the Scottish Rite chapter of the Masons of this city. He was a member of the Algeria Shrine patrol and of the B.P.O.E. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was actively connected with the business and social life of the city.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Masonic temple. Members of the Masonic order will attend the services in a body.
