Victoria Brakel, of Kalamazoo, passed away on February 23, 2007 at Tendercare of Kalamazoo. She was born February 19, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI to the late John and Aksenia (Bobko) Jurczuk. Victoria received two Baccalaureate degrees, one in education and the other in occupational therapy and her Masters degree in occupational therapy all from Western Michigan University. She practiced her occupational therapy at the V.A. Medical Center in Battle Creek, MI for 30 years before retiring. She married Raymond Brakel on November 9, 1946 in Grand Rapids, MI who preceded her in death in April of 1973. Victoria had numerous interests and hobbies but her grandson, Justin Howard was first and foremost in her life. Among her other interests were flower gardening, where she was a member of the Rose Garden Club for many years; sewing, cooking, bowling and golfing. She is survived by her children, Jacquelynn (Thomas) Bloemers of Kalamazoo, MI, Barbara Brakel and Linda Kartell of West Palm Beach, FL and Robert Brakel; grandson, Justin Howard; four brothers and two sisters. Preceding her in death were four brothers and one sister. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Redmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49008, (269) 343-6156. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 Lake Street, Kalamazoo. Fr. John Peter Ambrose Celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the St. Joseph Room located in the Church Rectory following the burial. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
