John Simpson Spruiell's burial: My family says that he died on his farm near Wolf Creek, Alabama and that at that time their was a hugh flood and they could not get him to a cemetery so they buried him on the farm. Over the years most of the family moved either to Leeds or Moody Alabama and the farm was sold. Travel was extremely hard in those days as horse/mule and wagons were the accepted mode of transport and the area from Leeds to Wolf Creek was mountainous (Lower section of the Appalachians) so they were unable to look after the grave site. Many years later my Father and others tried to find the site and were not successful. The belief is that the ground was used as a pasture and perhaps farmed over. Nancy Agnes Carmichael Spruiell (wife) was buried in the old Moody Cemetery. I have been there several times and have found several Spruiells and Spruills but not her site.(Tom)

Wolf Creek is a community in St. Clair County SE of Leeds and SW of Pell City. St. Clair County has two County Seats, Pell City and Ashville. The county is split between 2 very hilly areas so back in the early 1800's the people elected for 2 county seats because travel was difficult. Leeds sits in 3 counties, Jefferson, St. Clair and Shelby. The town of Leeds is mostly in Jefferson. The farm I grew up on was primarily in St. Clair. Other small communities near Wolf Creek are Calcis, Sterrett, Vandiver and Dunavant. Names and places from my growing up years.(Tom)
