Mayor Robert E. Brown, 77, of East Eighth Street, Watsontown, passed away peacefully Friday, April 10, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family following a five-year battle with cancer.

"Brownie" was born August 17, 1931 in Bellefonte, a son of the late Edward C. and Mary H. (Bathurst) Brown. On December 19, 1953 he married the former Sylvia Joy Cole and they have celebrated 55 years of marriage.

A 1950 graduate of Bellefonte High School, he had worked at Mallory's Drug Store, Bellefonte. He entered the United States Air Force later in 1950 and served his country honorably during the Korean War. He was a radio operator and flew 41 combat missions in Korea and Japan.

In 1955 he relocated his family to Watsontown and was employed at Claster's, Milton for 45 years, retiring as Assistant Manager. He and his wife had also owned and operated Brown's Grocery Store in Watsontown from 1961 to 1973.

Mayor Brown has served as the Mayor of Watsontown for 24 years and had previously served on the borough council for eight years. During the course of his tenure, he was especially proud of the Watsontown Bridge Project and the Eighth Street Park Renovation Project.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Watsontown where he served as an elder and chairman of the building and operations committee.

He was a member of the Bellefonte VFW, Watsontown Lions, Watsontown Lodge #401, F & AM and a former member of the Williamsport Consistory. He was a life member of the Logan Fire Company of Bellefonte and the Watsontown American Legion Post 323. He was a member and past-president of the Warrior Run Fire Department (formerly West Branch Fire Co.) since 1955 and had served as the carnival chairman for 26 consecutive years. He loved hunting and fishing and was a member of Hunter's Lodge Cabin in Renovo.

However, the most precious times he cherished were the times he spent with his family and grandchildren. He will always be remembered for the humorous stories and jokes he loved to share with his family and friends.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Roberta Joy Brown of Watsontown; three sons and daughters-in-law: Chris Alan and Pamela Brown, State College; Robert E., II and Regina Brown, Watsontown; and Curt Lee and Carol S. Brown, Northumberland; nine grandchildren: Scott Snyder, Ryan Moore, Liane Marie Herald, Sadie, Matthew, Cecilia Joy, Sean Robert, Cole Rosser, and Caden Lee Brown; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Lucas of Bellefonte; a special sister-in-law, Darlene Brown and her companion Barry Bastian, Watsontown; and his special extended family members, Robert and Ione Lynn in Alaska and Scott Herald of Milton.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles Edward Brown and two brothers: Kenneth E. and Thomas E. Brown.

Private gravesides services with full military honors will be held in Watsontown Cemetery.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Wednesday at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 401 Main Street, Watsontown with the Rev. Paul A. Smith, his pastor, officiating. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the service in the social hall of the church.
