Landon Burdette Pugmire arrived November 3, 1909 the first child of Landon Rich Pugmire & Carrie Wilhelmsen Brewer. He, and his brother, Laurel, learned at an early age the value of work and of always giving a full days work for a full days pay. He attended grade school in St. Charles and Fielding High School in Paris. Burdette was very active in student affairs and played on the varsity basketball and football team. Here he met and fell in love with his future wife, Vilda Passey, whom he proposed to before he left on his mission to England, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burdette came home from his mission in August and he and Vilda were married for time and all eternity on September 11, 1931 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in St. Charles, Idaho where their first two children, Merrill Burdette and Merlyn were born. Their second daughter, Lynette arrived eight years later making their family complete. They purchased their first home there in St. Charles in 1936 and enjoyed living there for fifty three years looking each morning at the beautiful view of Bear Lake. Burdette was always active in the church. He served as president of the Elders Quorum, president of the Mutual, teacher in Sunday School, counselor in the Bishopric, Bishop, then counselor in the Stake Presidency, which position he held for ten years, Stake President for an additional ten years, member of the High Council, and as a ward and home teacher. While Burdette was Stake President, he and Vilda had the opportunity of having many of the General Authorities stay in their home. Burdette devoted his life to serving the Lord in what ever position he was called. He also served his family in the same manner. He was asked to speak at many funerals, in and out of the Bear Lake Valley. After he started keeping track, he spoke at one hundred thirty three funerals outside of St. Charles and one hundred forty nine in St. Charles. He was always so honored to be asked to speak and he strived to bring comfort and hope to the families. Burdette was always active in civic affairs. He served as a County Commissioner, on the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital Board, where he acted as Chairman for twenty years. He labored diligently to help pass the bond for the Bear Lake County Nursing Home. He was elected Mayor of the City of St. Charles and was instumental in getting the sewer system installed. He was chairman of the Bear Lake Cattle Association and clerk for the Bear Lake Regional Commission. He became an agent for the National Public Service Insurance Company after he was released as Stake President and there he was chosen "Man of the Year" for the entire company the second year there. Burdette enjoyed good health most of his life. Burdette and Vilda had to leave their home in St. Charles in 1989 because of Vilda's poor health. This was a hard decision for them, but knew it was best to move to Ovid, Idaho with their daughter, Merlyn and her husband Darrell. They had an apartment built on the back of the Sorenson home and this became their home for Vilda for three years and Burdette for eight years. Burdette often said his prayers were answered that he was allowed to live to take care of his sweet wife while she needed him. His goal then became to endure to the end so that he would be worthy to be with his precious wife again for all etenity. Burdette passed away from this earthly life on November 10, 1996, ready to meet his beloved sweeetheart and mate, Vilda. Yes, he did endure to the end! (History written by Merlyn Sorenson)
