Lucille was born in Elihu, Kentucky on March 28th, 1923 to the late Sherman Edward Chitwood and Maude Acres Chitwood. She was a faithful member of East Somerset Baptist Church and a longtime member of the East Somerset Homemakers Club. In her lifetime, she was a loving mother, devoted wife and friend. To her grandchildren, she leaves a legacy of faith, compassion and extraordinary love.
She was survived by one son, James (and Diann) VanHook of Somerset, Kentucky; three daughters, Susie (and Dr. Don) McAlpin and Jenny (and Michael) Ledford, both of Somerset, Kentucky, and Patricia (and Sam) Cox of Westerville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Matt VanHook, Rebecca Stopher, Dr. Josh McAlpin, Zach McAlpin, Mandy Lucille (and Brian) Young, Michael B. Ledford, Jr., J. David (and Stacy) Ledford, Suzie Ledford, Tripp (and Deirdre) Cox; six great-grandchildren, Lane Stopher, Haley McAlpin, Christian Young, Bella McAlpin, Samantha Ledford and James David Ledford, Jr.; two sister-in-laws, Pauline Chitwood and Ruth Chitwood; and many loving nieces, nephews and a host of friends who mourn her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman Edward and Maude Chitwood; her husband, James Herschel "Rip" VanHook, who she married on June 10th, 1942 and who departed this life on October 4th, 1982; five brothers, Raymond Chitwood, Vercie Gene Chitwood, Harry Chitwood, Sherman Edward "Junior" Chitwood, and Dean Chitwood; and two sisters, Bernice Shadoan and Mae Neeley Wood.
Visitations were held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 and again on Wednesday, February 2nd, after 8:00 a.m. at the East Somerset Baptist Church. A celebration of Lucille's life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2nd, also at East Somerset Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Darvie Fenison.
Burial followed in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Somerset, Kentucky.
