Arthur was born and grew up in the Harbine, Nebraska area. As a child, he was injured from falling off a hay rack and remained frail for the rest of his life. Arthur was described as having brown eyes and dark hair. Always living with his mother, he never married. He worked at the general store of Harbine until 1944. He later worked part-time at the service station across the street from their house. He joined the Hope Reformed Church in 1944. He and his mother moved to Fairbury, Nebraska in 1961 where he joined the First Christian Church in 1973. He moved to the Heritage Nursing Home in 1972 where he lived for the rest of his life.
