The son of William Ferren (1767-1838) of Donegal, Ireland and his wife Mary McCartney (1757-1834), William Ferren married Mary Nixon and had 8 children: Sarah Jane, Moses Ayers, John, Jefferson, William Jr., Eliza, Samuel and Maria Ferren. William was one of the organizing stockholders of the First National Bank of Centerville, founded in 1863. He also served two terms as Sheriff of Appanoose County from 1856-59.
