Leonard Bernard Grotta was born November 11,1884 on the farm of his parents, Iver and Lasina Tokle Grotta, in Esmond Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He grew to manhood on the farm and attended Jewell College, Jewell, Iowa and Red Wing Seminary, Red Wing, Minn., graduating from the latter in 1907.

The young man went to Stanley County and took a homestead. He was married Aug. 28, 1912 to Christena Amble of this vicinity. to them four children were born. The family lived in Stanley County until October 1929 when they moved to this Manchester farming until 1941.

He leaves 5 sisters and brothers; Ida Belzer, Edwin Grotta, Bessie Manley, Ella Jeffers, and Elmer Grotta.
