Mariah is the daughter of Charles Holshouser and Elizabeth Kluttz. On Christmas Eve, 1868, she married John Rufus Miller and they are the parents of Minnie, Laura, Luther Adolphus and Carrie Levina.

John had served in the CSA, being captured, released in exchange, serving again and sustaining injuries then being captured again while in hospital. He was finally released at war's end after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

John was admitted to the state hospital the year it opened (1883) and the children were small (between the ages of 5 and 14). He died there 30 years later and is buried in the hospital cemetery.
