The son of Anthony Kurkowski and Pauline Kurkowski, was born at Richfield Springs, Otsego County, New York, on February 12th, 1896. He attended the Richfield Springs public school. At the time of his call to the service, September 9th, 1918, he was working on the home farm near this village. He was assigned to Co. B,2nd Division, Camp Jackson, S. C, and transferred to Quartermaster's Corps, Barracks Co. No. 1, East Utilities Division, located at the same camp. Here he was employed as motor truck driver.
