Civil War Veteran
Thomas enlisted for 3 years as a private in Company I, 79th Illinois U.S. Infantry on August 9, 1862 in York, Clark County, Illinois and mustered in on August 28, 1862. He was a farmer, 39 years old, from Bellair, Crawford County, Illinois, married with 5 children and his nativity was Hutsonvillle, Crawford County, Illinois. He died of typhoid fever on April 7, 1863 in a General Field Hospital at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
His wife, Mary E. Newlin Lewis, filed for a pension on June 18, 1863 and filed for minor children on June 6, 1868. She was remarried in 1868 and assumed guardianship of their children.

His brother, John Kelly Newlin (FAG #90574183), served in the same military unit, both died of typhoid fever and are buried in the same cemetery.
