Actor. Born in Peoria, Illinois, he first appeared on television in "The Elgin Hour" in 1955. He made his Broadway debut in October that same year, as psychiatrist, 'Major Royal Demming', in the comedy "No Time for Sergeants", staying with the production for the run of the play, which closed in September 1957. It proved to be his breakout roll and he was cast for the film version of the play in 1958. He then became a fixture in television in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in such series as '77 Sunset Strip,' 'Dennis the Menace,' 'Lost in Space,' 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,' 'Adam-12', and 'The Brady Bunch.' He returned three times to 'Perry Mason,' and perhaps most notably, three times to 'The Twilight Zone' in the episodes 'The After Hours,' 'Mr. Dingle, the Strong,' 'I Dream of Genie.' He also appeared in the feature films, 'The Ghost and Mr Chicken' (1966), 'How to Frame a Figg' (1971), and 'Truck Turner' (1973). Through the 1970s, he appeared in several episodes of 'Love, American Style,' ' The Odd Couple,' and 'Here's Lucy' among others. His last role was in a 1979 episode of 'Happy Days.' He then retired from the business and moved to Mississippi where he died at age 77 after a battle with cancer.
