Dr. Glenn L. Bushey, former president of Asheville-Biltmore College, now UNC-Asheville, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006. He was 101.

Born in York Springs, Penn., he was a son of the late George N. and Emma Lehr Bushey.

Dr. Bushey earned a B.S. degree in education from Shippensburg State College in 1928, an M.A. degree in education from Columbia University in 1934, and a doctorate in education in American History from Temple University in 1939.

Prior to World War II, he served as a high school assistant principal, coach and teacher, and later became an assistant professor of history and education at Appalachian State University. Dr. Bushey served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the China-Burma-India theater. During his army service he was awarded four Bronze Stars. Immediately after the war, he taught at Bethany College.

In 1947, he was appointed president of Asheville-Biltmore College, now the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Under his leadership the college expanded greatly and moved twice, arriving at its current campus location in 1961. Dr. Bushey was instrumental in helping pave the way for the college's transition to a four-year institution and its eventual incorporation into the North Carolina University System. In 1962, he became dean of Evening and Special Classes at the University of Chattanooga, now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was a founding member of UTC's chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

He held memberships in various historical and educational societies, including the Association of University Evening Colleges, North Carolina Governor's Commission on Higher Education, and other advisory committees. He was a past president of the North Carolina Educational Association's Division of Higher Education.

Dr. Bushey received a Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina in 1977, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Shippensburg State College in 1978, an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1998, and a Merit Certificate for outstanding service from the Association for Continuing Education and Adult Higher Education.
