PANA — Arlington Roberts Abrell, 81, of Pana died Friday, August 5, 2005 at 10:10 a.m. in his residence. He was born December 8, 1923 in Pana, IL, the son of Rex & Mildred Lyles Abrell.


Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 9, 2005 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. M. Thomas Swantner and Rev. Lawrence Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Rosemond Grove Cemetery, Rosamond with graveside military rites by VFW/AmVets/American Legion Honor Guard, Pana. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Send condolences/sign guest book at www.mccrackendean

He was a 1941 graduate of Pana Township High School. He worked for Sunbeam Bakery for 17 years and was the secretary and business agent for the Confectionary & Tobacco Union until he retired. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters with the Black Hawk Division where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in approximately 1 year. Arlington was widely respected and recognized for his playing and teaching ability in tennis and many people in the Pana and Decatur area benefited from his patient and outstanding instruction. He had a longtime interest in photography as well as many other sports and activities. He served as photographer for the Illinois State VFW. Arlington was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pana; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4431, Pana, where he served as Quartermaster for 45 years; Pana Masonic Lodge #225 AF&AM where he was past Patron; Arcana Chapter Order of Eastern Star; and American Legion, all in Pana. He was recognized by the Jaycees in 1989 with the Distinguished Service Award.

He married Esther McQuire on September 14, 1946 in Pana. She survives along with their daughter, Arla Anne Abrell, Bloomington, IL; and his special extended family: Lavonne Long; Ryan Long & wife Kim; Amanda Long; Bredan Long; and Xander Long. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Lyle "Joe" Abrell and brother Rex Abrell who died in childhood.
