John was born a "Van Ussen", but used "Van Essen" in his adult life since Van Essen was a fairly common, recognizable, Dutch name and Van Ussen was not (a very rare name). Since many people heard "Van Essen" when he said his last name he just went with the path of least resistance.

He was, at various times, a Grocery Delivery Clerk, Butcher, Prison Guard, and Farmer.
