SUNDERLAND -- Edward James Hayes, 79, a resident of South Road in Sunderland, died on Wednesday morning, June 30, 2004 at the Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.
Mr. Hayes was born on Dec. 17, 1924 in East Arlington, the son of George and Alice (Woodard) Hayes. He attended local schools and served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II, attaining the rank of tech fourth grade with the 514 Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Co. His tours of duty included Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. His marriage to Martha Buck took place on Nov. 27, 1946. Mrs. Hayes died on Feb. 23, 1998.
In his early years, Ed worked at Swezey Lumber Co. where he did logging and trucking. He later operated G&H Sand and Gravel in Manchester and then, for more than 30 years, raised and trained race horses.
Ed was a member of American Legion Post # 69 in Arlington, the Harned-Fowler Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manchester and a 50-year member of the Arlington Fire Co. He especially enjoyed mowing lawns and flower gardening.
Mr. Hayes is survived by a son, and his wife ; two grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews; and his longtime and special friend Howard Sprankle of Manchester. In addition to his wife Martha, Ed was predeceased by two brothers, William Hayes and Henry Hayes and a sister, Mary Waite.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. The Rev. Thomas Truscott, interim pastor of the Federated Church of East Arlington, will officiate. Military honors will be provided by members of American Legion Post 69 and Harned-Fowler Post VFW. There are no calling hours planned.
