She died peacefully surrounded by her family on January 27, 2011. The daughter of John Charles and Mary Craven Spencer, she was born September 20, 1921 in Chicago, IL. Helen attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Sheridan Road and Trinity College in Washington D.C. She graduated from Rosemount College in Philadelphia, PA. Helen met her husband, Francis P. Matthews, Jr. in Washington D.C. They were married on June 10, 1944 and settled in Omaha after the war. A loving mother to her eight children, Helen was also active in several Omaha causes. She served as Chairperson of the EPS Board and the Bergan Mercy Hospital Candlelight Ball committee. Helen is remembered for her graciousness and dignity. She is survived by her husband, Francis (Frank) Matthews; children, Patrick Matthews of Racine, WI., Anne (Arnold) Weitz of Omaha, Michaela (Jeff) Colquhoun of Camden, ME., Joan (Robert) Miller of Omaha, John (Karen) Matthews of Omaha, Thomas (Madeleine) Matthews of Omaha, Eileen (Jay Graham) Hansen of Mill Valley, CA. Molly (Fernando) Multedo of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; 20 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; siblings, Dr. Robert (Lolly) Spencer of Scottsdale, AZ., Betty (Jack) Floberg of Potomac, MD.; sisters in law, Grace Spencer and Patricia Spencer; nieces and nephews.
SERVICES Tuesday, February 1st at 11:15am at the St. Cecilia Cathedral. Interment, Calvary Cemetery. VISITATION begins Monday, 6pm with a Wake Service at 7pm in the Our Lady of Nebraska Chapel in the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Cecilia Cathedral or Mount Michael Abbey.
