Bessie Jane was the daughter of Ralph "Papa" Airle Armstrong-(1877-1951), and Bessie "Mama" Woolridge-(1881-1944). She was the fourth of nine children. Her siblings were: Ralph Early-(1901-1982), Elizabeth-(1904-1904), John Woolridge-(1906-1938), (BESSIE), David William-(1912-?), James Donald-(1914-1937), Thomas-(1916-?), Carl Edmond-(1918-1946), and George-(1920-1991).

About 1925 she married John Robert Fields-(1905-1997). They adopted two boys: Roy Earl-(1928-1994), and David William-(1933-1991).
