The deceased was born in Lake County, OH, in July 1830, his age of death being 77 years, 9 months and 30 days. He was raised as a farmer and followed that occupation, coming from the Buckeye state to this township 52 years ago. Mr. Crofoot was a tireless worker and with the elements of economy and fidelity to duty, managed to build up a fine estate for himself. Some years ago, through and unfortunate incident, he received much undesirable notoriety and as a result the venerable man has been worrying and became bowed down in grief. Then came the death of his wife and the terrible accident to his son, Schuyler, the latter losing his life while using dynamite in blowing up stumps on his farm. All these misfortunes tended to depress Mr. Crofoot and his physical framework, once so robust and impregnable, gave way under the strain of misfortune. He was united in marriage at South Bend Sept. 18, 1856, to Miss Nancy Pruner. The deceased had many good traits and was held in high esteem by many friends he made in this locality.

Son Schuyler died on farm using dynomite to blow up stumps.
