German records show he was born on the 9th of December 1833. youngest of nine children. Most of his siblings died very young, his older brother Andreas Schondienst stayed in Villingen, Germany to run the family farm. Johann came to the USA on June 3, 1853 on a ship called "The Statesman" he landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi to Glascow, Missouri. He worked in a flour mill as an engineer for two years in Missouri. John heard of of another opportunity to work in a flour mill in Carlyle, Illinois in 1855 he moved to Carlyle and worked at the Robinson flour mill for four years. While he was in Carlyle he married Francisca Schuster about October 1859. John and Francisca had one child. Joseph was born on the 12 of March 1861. Francisca died on the 20 of March 1861 from complications from the birth of Joseph. Joseph died in June that same year. John relocated to Germantown and remarried Mary Holtmann on Febuary 11, 1862 in Germanton and had 10 children. John worked at the Hanover Star mill as an engineer until he retired. John died of throat cancer on Febuary 28, 1903 and was buried in St Boniface cemetery on March 3, 1903
