The son of Rev. Adam & Jane Blakeman, he graduated Harvard in 1663 and was ordained to preach in Malden , Mass. He married Rebecca Scottow of Boston on April 1, 1675. They were living in Saco, Maine in 1678 and removed to Boston.

From his father's will: "Concerning my books, which I intended fro my son Benjamin, seeing his thoughts are after another course of life, that his thoughts be not to attend the work of Christ in the ministry, my wish is that my son, Joshua Atwater, make his son, Joshua a scolar, and fit him for that work, I give unto him all my Latin Books; but if not, they shall be put into my estate and disposed of as my wife and my overseers see fit." After the date of his father's will, the Rev. Benjamin Blakeman was eduated for the ministry.
