During World War I, Illinois-born Minnie M. Scott became a decorated battlefield nurse serving Allied armed forces in Europe before the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917. Minnie always took great pride at having "beat Black Jack Pershing to France". For nearly two decades after the war, Minnie served as a public health nurse in Lawrence, seat of Douglas County, Kansas, Minnie died on January 25, 1962, at Topeka, the capitol city of Kansas, and was interred according to her wishes at the foot of the graves io her parents. At her request, her simple headstone reads only "Their Daughter". A U.S. government gravestone was added in honor of her distinguished military service.
