Colorful Pioneer Dies At Hayden
MESA, Oct. 2 - Last rites for Jose L. Gonzales, 76-year-old Mexican who was one of Arizona's most colorful pioneers, will be held here Saturday. At 7:40 a.m., Saturday, mass will be read at the Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Leo Gattes officiating. Funeral services will be at 4p.m. in the chapel of the Meldrum Mortuary here. Rosary was spoken tonight in the chapel.
Mr. Gonzales came to Arizona in 1880. In the early days he followed the trade of teamster and hauled water to workers at the mines at Congress Junction and at the Roosevelt Dam. At one time he followed placer mining at Wickenburg. He had made his home in Phoenix the past 15 years.
He died Monday at Hayden where he had gone for a visit with his daughter, Mrs. H.L.Bernal. He had made his home here prior to moving to Phoenix and had returned here several times for long visits with his children.
He is survived by two sons, A.B.Gonzales of Mesa and Frank B.Gonzales of Los Angeles; and three daughters Mrs.Bernal, Mrs. Ralph Torres of Phoenix and Mrs. Rupert Ruiz of Mesa. Also one sister, Mrs. Elena Alvardo of Phoenix.
Burial will be in the Mesa Cemetery.
