Sara Christine Altland Swafford

Sara Christine Swafford, 87, passed away Sept. 23, 2006, at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born July 25, 1919, in Geneseo, the daughter of James Claude and Susan Elizabeth Bolton Altland.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1936, attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from Sterling College in 1969.
A longtime Hutchinson resident, Chris was a dedicated and beloved teacher who began her career at Franklin School in Ellsworth County and Holyrood Grade School from 1938 to 1941. Her love and commitment to education and to her students continued in the Hutchinson School District, where she completed her career with more than 15 years at Avenue A School. She was loved by generations of her students and although Chris will be missed, her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched on a meaningful level.

She and her husband, Bill, owned Swafford Food Store at 17th and Monroe from 1947 to 1972 and Swafford Framing from 1972 to the present.
She belonged to Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, EHU, Girl Scouts, NEA and the Hutchinson Teachers Association.

Chris and her husband, Bill, were married at Tenth Avenue EUB Church, in Hutchinson on Dec. 9, 1945.

She is survived by her beloved family: husband, J. William Swafford, of the home; a son, Dr. William S. Swafford and wife, Laura, Lee's Summit, Mo.; a daughter, Sheri Rosenberg and husband, Scott, Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Joan Easter, Hutchinson, and Esther Swan, Liberal; and two grandchildren, Camy Swafford, Nashville, Tenn., and Kyle Swafford, Lee's Summit, Mo.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Alan D. Stambaugh presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Memorials may be sent to Hutchinson Public Library, to be used to purchase children's books, in care of the funeral home.
