Garrett and his brother William were part of the great migration of 1793 from New Jersey to Kentucky.

He was a Minute Man with the Somerset Co., NJ militia during the Revolutionary War, a Sgt in Seely's Regiment. A placque bearing his name can be found in the Revolutionary Acre, in Old Fort Harrod, Mercer Co., KY.

He married Catherine Van Nuys in 1778 and they were the parents of 9 children.
