Stella Helen Sobyra, 98, of Cook, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday, September 9, 2007, at her residence.

She was born on April 19, 1909 in Chicago, Illinois, the first child of Stanley and Anna (Wzorek) Bernal. She married William M. Sobyra, Sr. on May 21, 1927 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chicago and resided on the south side in the Back of the Yards.

In 1950 they moved to St. Turibius parish where she was the secretary of the St. Ann's Society until she moved (she spoke and wrote Polish) and a member of the Altar & Rosary Society until it disbanded in 2006. In 1957 she moved to West Chicago and attended daily Mass at the Franciscan Christ the King Seminary. She helped the Friars prepare and serve their annual Festival dinner and other special occasions. She was noted for her sweet sour cabbage. In 1959 a new parish was established to serve the rising Catholic population and was staffed by the Franciscan's from Pulaski, Wisconsin. She was a charter member and was elected President of the Altar & Rosary Society and was responsible for running various fund raising functions and started a Saturday Cartoon show for the young people. She was a member of the Election Judges in her precinct for 25 years and even though she was a Democrat in Du Page County, she worked well with the team of Democrats and Republicans and their team was showcased when they had visitors come to see the system. She moved to Cook (Lake Vermilion) in September 1991, and became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and attended daily Mass until she had a stroke.

Stella was known for her crocheting (afghans, scarves, tablecloths, etc.) gardening designing and making Christmas ornaments and especially for her baking and cooking. She will also be remembered for her wishes God Bless You and reminder to say So Long and not Goodbye when she was leaving someone.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Sobyra of Cook; son Bill (Karen) Sobyra of Cook; daughter-in-law Mary Sobyra of Palatine, IL.; 10 Grandchildren, Deborah Sobyra of Chicago, Stanley (Dalia) Sobyra of Brookfield, IL., George (Susan) Sobyra of Addison, IL; Theresa Sobyra of Palatine, IL.
