Emma Lucinda Greever was born 3 March 1837 in Washington Co., Virginia to William and Amanda (Burgess) Greever.

In 1853, Emma joined her sister Eliza Jane and her husband James Hutchison as James' parents Joseph and Rachel Hutchison moved their extended family from Tennessee to Missouri. On 1 June 1854 Emma married her brother-in-law's brother Joseph Hutchison.
