Hammond-A former South Bend resident, who managed a pizza restaurant in Hammond, was slain late Monday night in a gun battle with a would-be robber from Calumet City.
John Ellis, 22, father of three children. John is the son of John J. and Margaret Ellis, 1721 S. Magnolia St., South Bend. John was married to the former Doris Ann Jones, also of South Bend.
Detectives said Ellis, a South Bend Washington High School graduate, died of a bullet wound near the heart while en route to the hospital.
Surviving are his wife Doris, of Hammond; his parents, John and Margaret Ellis; his grandparents, Frank and Mary Barilich, of South Bend; a daughter, Hope; two sons, Jonny, and Dennis, all of Hammond; two sisters, Peggy, and Kathy, of South Bend.
