Silas Montegomery Dowell was the son of Willis A. Dowell and Juliaetta (Grange) Dowell. He was one of 11 children. His siblings include: Richard, Pleasant, Francis, Patience, John A., Emmaline, Elizabeth, Melissa, Lucy Ann and Amanda.

By age 18, Silas had moved to Franklin in Des Moines County, Iowa. He married Charlotte M. Cabler on Aug 13, 1862 in Henderson County, IL. They had 12 children.

His first wife, Charlotte died in 1890. In 1906, at the age of 68, he married again to Elmera "Myra" Furnald (1839-1910) and lived in Gladstone, IL.
