Benedict, Howard T. 91 of East Grand Rapids and formerly of Shelby, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006 at the Clark Retirement Community in East Grand Rapids. He had moved there in October 2003. Mr. Benedict was born Aug. 5, 1915 in Grand Rapids to Thurlow and Louie (Hallack) Benedict. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1935 and worked at Rankin Hardware for 45 years. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the 10th Armored Division where he served as a medic with the U.S. Army. He had been a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and a faithful member of the Shelby United Methodist Church. He married Alice Ohlyne Wall June 16, 1946 in Maxton, N.C. She preceded him in death July 8, 1981. Mr. Benedict is survived by his daughter, Linda (James) Schultz of Muskegon; grandchildren, Jamie Schultz of Muskegon, Kristen (Eric) Robinson of Canton, Mich. and Robyn (Jack) King of Kansas City, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Brendan Frieders, Corrina, Zachary and Jackson King and Alyssa and Leah Robinson; and his sister, Freda Grover of Grand Rapids. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Hazel and Pearl Benedict. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
