SEASIDE, CA - Charles M. Marlar, Jr., 86, passed away at his home December 16, 2010.

Born in Hominy, Oklahoma March 9, 1924, he was the first-born child to Charles M. Marlar, Sr. and Gladys Marlar. Mr. Marlar graduated from Russell High School and entered Kansas University in 1942. WWII took him into the Air Force in 1943.

He and his parents moved to Marina, California in 1949. He and his father were volunteer firemen and were instrumental in building the first Volunteer Fire Department in Marina and in acquiring the first fire truck for the Marina Volunteer Department.

He was employed as a carpenter at the Presidio of Monterey and the Naval Postgraduate School where he retired after 25 years of service. He also owned and operated the Gulf Service Station on Fremont Blvd. in Seaside for many years. He was a member of the Seaside American Legion Post 591 and the Monterey Moose Lodge. He was an avid bowler for many of years at both Cypress Bowl and Monterey Lanes and for the American Legion and Moose Lodge travel teams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Rosie Veloz Marlar; his children, Dorothy (Dean) Ramsey, Charles M. Marlar III, James Marlar, Sr., Lulu (Kevin) DeBelle, Paulette (Jim) Gaut, Rose Marie Marshall, Paul (Laural) Gooden, Doug Gooden and Nelda Hume; grandchildren, Jessica, David and Ashley Ramsey, Carolynn and James Marlar, Jr., Brian and Katie DeBelle, JD Gaut, Lori Bennett, Lisa Patterson, Amy German, Shawn Gooden, Amanda Wagner, Patty Ferguson, Kimberly and Henry Hume; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Virgina Fitzgibbons and Betty Suhr.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we say good-bye to our father.

Visitation will be held at Oakwood Memorial Park in Santa Cruz on January 8, 2010 at 10:00am with services immediately following at Santa Cruz Memorial-Oakwood Chapel, 3301 Sweet Road, Santa Cruz, CA where he will be laid to rest with his parents.

There will be a celebration of Charles Marlar's life held at American Legion Post 591, 1000 Playa, Seaside, CA after the service. Donations in Mr. Marlar's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association . Published in The Monterey Herald from December 31, 2010 to January 2, 2011
