A. Steve Clay was a prominent attorney in Atlanta, the grandson of Georgia senator Alexander Stephens Clay and nephew of General Lucius D. Clay. A graduate of Marietta High School and the University of Georgia, he was a partner in the Hirsch, Smith, and Kilpatrick law firm of Atlanta.

He was one of 20 people killed aboard Pennsylvania Central Airlines Flight 142 (a Douglas DC-3) from Pittsburgh to Birmingham when it crashed into the west slope of Cheat Mountain in West Virginia shortly after takeoff.

He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Richard Hames; wife, Sara Latimer Clay; his daughter, Sallie L. Clay; and his son, A.S. Clay IV.
