Lieutenant H. F. Butler Dies from Injuries

Was en-route from Nashville to Tullahoma in Jeep When Unfortunate Crash Occurred

A tragedy of war snuffed out the life of a young officer from this community, when First Lieutenant Horace Franklin Butler, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Butler of Martin, died Tuesday morning as a result of injuries received late Sunday night. Lieutenant Butler, accompanied by an enlisted man driver, was returning to Tullahoma, where he had been on an official mission. He had visited briefly with his parents and his wife and young baby at the Butler home, east of town on Sunday.

Details of the accident are meager, but it occurred between 11 and 12 o’clock Sunday night, when the jeep ran into a convoy of Army vehicles, dodging several trucks before finally colliding with one. Lt. Butler received severe head injuries and a broken arm. His people were notified and his mother left to be with him. She telephoned Monday night to say that the injured young man was resting comfortably, and that, doctors told her that his condition was not as serious as at first feared. He had been taken to an Army evacuation hospital near Beech Grove, Tennessee, where death occurred early Tuesday morning. His mother was with him when he died.

Lieutenant Butler entered the Army in February of 1941, and his advance was rapid during the time he served. He was with the 116th Engineers. He was married after entering the service, in 1942, to Miss Jeanie Browder of Odum, Georgia. A daughter was born to them just three weeks go, on Armistice Day, November 11. Mrs. Butler and the baby are at present at the home of the parents of the deceased.

Surviving are the wife and infant daughter, Linda; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Butler; two brothers, Private William H. Butler, who has been a Japanese prisoner for 18 month, and Seaman 1/C Harold E. Butler, now stationed at Hollywood, Florida; three sisters, Misses Sue Frances and Bonnie Lou Butler of Martin and Mrs. Seldon Parham (Minnie Mai) of Brownwood, Texas.

The body arrived in Martin at 12:40 Thursday afternoon and was taken to the family home. Funeral services will be held at the Central Baptist Church in Martin, the Reverend Knox Lambert officiating, but time for the funeral has not yet been set. Lieutenant Butler was a member of the Baptist Church at Americus, Georgia. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. W. W. Jones & Sons are in charge of arrangements.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the Butler family and the young wife and infant daughter. Lieutenant Butler was one of the many fine young men that have gone out from their community in the defense of their country. Men like he will be sorely needed in the battle days to come and in the world of peace to follow. But he has fought the good fight. Peace to his memory.
