William J. BROWN, 74, a retired farmer died at 2:40 p.m. Monday in his home, 517 West Fourth Street, of a heart ailment. He had been ill four years and bedfast for the last two and a half years. Born June 12, 1875, in Roann, he was the son of James and Catherine BROWN. Most of his life was spent in a farm near Mentone from which he moved to Rochester two and a half years ago. Twice married, his first wife, Tina STOCKBERGER, died 14 years ago. On November 18, 1938, he was wed to Lily APPLEGATE, who survives. A veteran of the Spanish-American war, he was a member of the A. H. Skinner veterans post. He also belonged to St. Paul's E.U.B. church. Surviving with his wife are four step-daughters, Mrs. Fred HORN, Mentone, Mrs. Madge POSSELL, Mrs. Gail HART, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Clara SHERRARD of Indianapolis; one sister, Mrs. Nora SHEFFLER, Albion; a half-brother, Merle BROWN, Akron; one foster daughter, Mrs. Fredia WALDON, Kokomo, and twenty-six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. DST Thursday in the local EUB church by the Rev. William HUGHES. Burial will be in the Sycamore cemetery near Mentone. Military services will be held at the grave by the A. H. Skinner post and the Mentone American Legion. The body has been removed from the Johns Funeral Home in Mentone to the family residence at 517 West Fourth St., here, where friends may call.
