She was the daughter of Robert Edward Green and Frances Arizona "Ari" Hawkins. She went to Campbell University. She married Lawrence Agustus Denton Sr. and they had one son Lawrence Agustus Denton Jr. who married Martha Louise Brewer who was the daughter of Walter Henry Brewer and Leatrice Flay Clark.

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Gaynelle Green Denton, the daughter of Robert Edward and Frances (Hawkins) Green was born 11-1-09 and died Sunday, 6-14-98, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. Survived by one son, Lawrence (Larry) A. Denton Jr. and his wife, Martha of Roanoke Rapids, she was the widow of Lawrence A. Denton who preceded her in death in 1967.

She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Joan Jervis of San Francisco, CA. Other survivors are three nieces, Mabel B. Harrell, Inez G. Woodruff, and Bettie H. Rudd. Her neice, Frances G. Jackson and her nephew, Bert Edward Butts also preceded her in death. She is further survived by great-neices, Rachel B. Wilder, Sue B. Tidrick, Cynthia P. Forsyth, Diantha H. Smith and Kristi J. Rudd and great-nephews, Calvin Butts, Johnnie Jackson, Steven Pittard, Joseph Jackson, Keith Rudd and Joseph Harrell.

A Graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Campbell College, A.A. She also attended the Iniversity of North Carolina, Greensboro.

She was named in the Who's Who of American Women and received the 2000 Women of Achievement Award. She was a librarian until her retirement in 1976. She was a substitute teacher for the Roanoke Rapids City Schools and served on the Governor's Study Committee on Public Schools. She had served as Publicity Chairman for the Halifax COunty chapter American Cancer Society, was a member of Citizens Adv. Com. for City Schools, on the exec. bd. Roanoke Rapids Chapter N. C. Symphony Society, Hospital Guild, a member N.C. Congress Parents and Teachers (State Chm. 1959-63), was on the board of directors for the Roanoke Rapids Chamber of Commerce in 1955, was a member of Epsilon Sigma Ornicran (chpt. pres. 1966-68), and Epsilon Pi Eta. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter; Potecasi.

She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church, a member of Halfax County Genealogical Society, Friends of the Library, a member of the Federation of Women's Clubs (rec. secy. 1963-66, state chmn library services 1968-70), and honored with lifetime membership in 1982, and a member of the Elizabeth Montford Ashe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Insignia Chairman, a member of the Roanoke Rapids Chapter #2332 United Daughters of the Confederacy, served as Chapter President and served as Registrar for 32 years and was currently serving in that capacity. She served as District Director and served the North Carolina Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy as North Carolina State President 1986-1988. A certificate of appreciation was presented to her in 1997 by the North Carolina Division for her dedicated service to the North Carolina History Bowl. She was a member of the UDC Granddaughter Club and the UCD Great Granddaughter Club.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. W. Chris Aydlett and Rev. Charles W. Wilson. Burial will follow in Hawkins Chapel Church Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral Home Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of the son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Martha Denton.
