Son of James McNeill, Sr. and Sarah [Dunlap] McNeill, and was Grandson of Neal Bell McNeill, born at Bell Castle, Argyleshire, Scotland. Named for his Uncle Laughlin. Brought to the United States by his Parents along with a sister, Ann, and a brother, James, Jr. in about c.1790. Two other sisters, Mary and Sarah, were born in Pennsylvania. Briefly settled in Lancaster County, then Somerset County. Married c.1820 to Sarah McClintock. Census and other records show the last name spelling variously as McNEILL, McNEIL, & McNEAL.
