Spelman,a Mechanic, residing in Westfield, Massachusetts, aged 26, enlisted on September 24, 1862 as a Private, serving the State of Massachusetts. He survived the war, dying on June 30, 1911. He enlisted in Company C, Massachusetts 46th Infantry Regiment on September 25, 1862. He mustered out on July 29, 1863 at Hampden Park, Springfield, Massachusetts. Spelman took part in the battles of Kinston, Whitehall and Goldsborough, North Carolina in the Eighteenth Army Corps under Major-General Foster. He also served in the Second Army Corps in the Battle of Gettysburg. He returned home and engaged in the lumber business for the duration of his working life. He married Mary Louisa Cowell on January 17, 1866 in Blandford, Massachusetts. According to death records, Edward S. Spelman died of cancer of the stomach in Westfield, MA.
