James is the son of Dr. James Edenton McEachern and Margaret Fisher. He is a brother to an infant boy born 1847, John R McEachern (1849 to 1857), David Hall McEachern, Elizabeth Eugenia "Betty" McEachern Brown and Thomas E McEachern.

He married Lottie Brown and they are the parents of Margie and Elizabeth.
