Mary K. Ahrens, 80, of Woodstock, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Chicago, to William C. and Mary C. (Patterson) Lowrey. She married Robert D. "Bob" Ahrens on May 21, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa.
She and her husband were longtime residents of Woodstock. In addition to her full-time job of raising a family, she occasionally worked with her husband in the family business at Peet Frate Trucking Co. in Woodstock, and she had fond memories of the hours she donated at the Woodstock Memorial Hospital gift shop.
In addition to enjoying crocheting, her bible studies, and playing cards, she was an avid golfer. She and her husband were members of the Woodstock Country Club for more than 40 years, and members of the Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club in Florida. Many of her fondest memories are of their time spent in Florida with both old and new friends.
She was a member of the Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry. Her involvement in the church was deeply important to her, and she tried to stay involved as much as possible. She was strongly committed to Prayer Team Ministry and would spend much of what she called her "quiet time" deep in prayer. If you were on her prayer list, they say you were on it forever. Most of all, she was devoted to her family and kept herself involved in all aspects of the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Kathi (Ken) Kunzer of McHenry, Berta vonBampus of Woodstock, Dick (Yvonne) Ahrens of Woodstock, Gere (Fred) Wissell of Williams Bay, Wis., Colleen (Ralph) Mullen of Genoa City, Wis., Rone (Jim Erickson) Colberg of Woodstock and Kelly Bush of Tahlequah, Okla.; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Sister Maura, RSM of Chicago; two brothers, Bob (Margaret) Lowrey of Denver and Jack Lowrey of Beloit; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert on April 12, 2007; a daughter, Renee Ahrens; two sons-in-law, Steve vonBampus and Willie Bush; a granddaughter, Kim Ahrens; two sisters; and three brothers.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Schneider Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road. Interment will follow in the Christ the King Cemetery, Wonder Lake.
Memorials may be made to either Holy Apostle Church or the Woodstock Fire Rescue District.
