WILLIAM D. BRANIGIN, 84, DIED WEDNESDAY MORING AT HOSPITAL
Illness Began With Paralytic Stroke on May 10, 1929 --- Funeral Friday Morning
William David Branigin, almost 84 years of age, a life-long resident of Johnson County and a son of pioneers of the county, died Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock at the Butler Hospital, on North Walnut Street. He had been critically ill for almost two weeks, having been at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Samuel Gibbs, of Indianapolis, a week ago last Thursday.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at the home of Elba L. Branigin, a son, on Banta Place. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery. Rev. Walt P. Halbert, pastor of the Franklin Baptist church, will be in charge of the funeral and burial services.
Friends may call at the Vandivier funeral parlors any time Thursday afternoon or at the W.L. Branigin home Friday morning after 1 o'clock.
Mr. Branigin was born Nov. 24, 1846, a son of Nicholas Smith and Sarah Jane Forsyth Branigin, who were prominent among the early residents of the county. He was born in a log cabin and educated in the log schools which were characteristic of that time.
As a young man, Mr. Branigin had quite a reputation for his prowess in out-of-door sports and he had maintained his active life until he was stricken by paralysis on May 10, 1929. After he had celebrated his 80th birthday, he continued to take care of his small farm at the South corporate limits of Franklin. His illness began with the stroke of paralysis which he suffered. He improved and was able to make visits with his children, but he never regained the vigor that was characteristic of him during the greater part of his life.
Mr. Branigin was married to Nancy Jane Lash, daughter of a neighbor, on Nov. 28, 1868, and to this union seven children, five of whom are living, were born. Those who are living are Elba L. Branigin of Franklin; Nora L. (Mrs. Will O. Springer) of Greenwood; Ollie A (Mrs. Samuel J. Gibbs) of Indianapolis; Daisy A. (Mrs. Watson M. Van Nuys) of Hopewell, and Verne Branigin, of Mount Vernon, Wash. Leland Branigin died in 1870 at the age of one year, and Stella Branigin died in 1892 at age 11.
