Fred Deaton

Fred Deaton, a resident of Abbeville, died Friday night, Sept. 30, 2005, in a Dothan hospital. He was 81.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the mortuary in Abbeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville Memorial Library, 301 Kirkland St., Abbeville, AL 36310.

Mr. Deaton was born and reared in Marion, Ill., and is the son of the late Harley Clyde Deaton and Ethna Tanner Deaton. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Pensacola in the South Pacific. Mr. Deaton lived in Chicago for 18 years before moving to Abbeville in 1962. He served as police chief for the City of Abbeville for many years. After his retirement, Mr. Deaton served as bailiff for the Henry County Court System. He was a member of the Brown's Cross Roads Masonic Lodge No. 529 and a former member of the Henry Masonic Lodge No. 91. Mr. Deaton was also a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Bradley-Keller American Legion Post and a former member of the Abbeville Kiwanis Club. Mr. Deaton was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Harley Deaton.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Beatrice Deaton, Abbeville; four sons, Danny Deaton and his wife, Susanne Deaton, Pensacola, Fla.; Doug Deaton and his wife, Cathy Deaton, Echo community; Donald Deaton and his wife, Terri Deaton; Bruce Deaton and his wife, Dinah Deaton, all of Abbeville; six grandchildren, Danny Deaton Jr., Laurie Battle and her husband, Troy Battle, Ryan Deaton, Amanda Gurman and husband, Mike Gurman, Ann Marie Bradley, Frederick Deaton; two stepgrandchildren, Justin Snell and Jessica Snell; two great-grandchildren, Kain Bradley and Emma Grace Gurman.
