Truman C. Allen was born in Charlton, Saratoga county, New York, March 9, 1804, and died at the home of his son-in-law, Nelson J. Letts, in Scott township, Steuben county, Indiana, January 23, 1899, aged 94 years, 10 months and 14 days.

He was married to Mahala Burroughs, Dec. 25, 1833, who survives him at the age of 82 years, having journeyed together in the marriage bonds for over 65 years, a remarkable length of time. Eleven children were born to them, of whom seven are now living.

Mr. Allen came with his family to Steuben county, settling first in Steuben township, on a farm owned by Frank Slaybaugh, in September, 1843. Later he moved to Scott township where he resided continuously until his death.

Since the organization of the Republican party he has been an ardent advocate of its principles. He first voted for president in 1828, casting his ballot for Clay and Adams, then called the National Republicans, and constituting the foundation of the Whig party. He was the oldest person in Steuben county. His death was not the result of disease, but simply the wearing out of the machinery that sustained his spirit in this earth life.

Funeral services were held at the North Scott Christian church, conducted by Elder E. P. Kemper, pastor of the Fairview church.
