William Henry Fitzhugh Payne served in the military at the start of the Civil War, surging the conflict and dying in 1904. Prior to and after the war, William worked as a lawyer, amassing a large estate, valued at 15000$. Mary Elizabeth Winston Payne was born in Colbert, Alabama to William Winter Payne and Minerva West Winston, working as a homemaker until her death.
After marrying Eppa Hunton Jr. on November 18, 1884, the couple did not produce any children. After Payne's death, Eppa Hunton Jr. remarried, birthing Eppa Hunton IV and another child that died within her first year. Eppa Hunton Jr. worked as a lawyer, supporting his brother and law and hiring a personal servant, indicating his high level of wealth. However, their are no censuses indicating that Erva Payne or her husband owned slaves, only servants after slavery was abolished by the United States government.
Erva Payne died on the 9th of October, 1897, in her hometown where she lived all her life. It is not clear what lead to her death but given her wealthy lifestyle and early death, disease must have ended her life. She was survived by her husband and stepson. In Hollywood cometery, her granestones reads "In loving memory of Erva Winston Payne, wife of Eppa Hunton Jr.," including another inscription describing her that is now ineligible.
