The son of Andrew & Catharine (Klinefelter) Seitz, he married English-born Hannah Heathcote January 28, 1840, and fathered Charles Thomas (b. 01/12/46 - 1st Pa Lt Art), Albert W. (01/08/48, d. 07/11/60), Sarah E. (b. 10/08/49 - married William Hoover), Alice Ann (b. 03/01/51 - married Christian L. Baumeister), May Una Amelia (b. 01/01/53), Elizabeth (b. @1853 [?]), Lewis Andrew (b. 05/05/1855), Robert Henry (b. 05/21/57), James G. Hunter (10/10/60), and Ada S. (b @1866). In 1860 he was a bank cashier living in Glen Rock, York County, Pennsylvania and stood 5' 6" tall.

A Civil War veteran, he formed a militia unit in Glen Rock right after the war began, then enlisted in York September 19, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 25 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. D, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He resigned his commission by reason of illness effective May 7, 1862, but the move was likely prompted - at least in part - by his disdain for his captain, Noah G. Ruhl.
