James H. Carter Sr., 75, of Clinchport, Route 1, died at his home at 2 am Thursday. A lifelong resident of Scott County, he was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his widow, Elizabeth (Sis) McDavid Carter; three sons: Eugene of Duffield, Billy of Clinchport and James H. Carter Jr. of Gate City; five daughters: Ellen (Kelly) Tipton, Ruth (Ray) Bishop and Lucille Carter of Clinchport; Maude (Henry) Riley of Pennington Gap and Edna (Pat) Bishop of Sunbright VA; four sisters: Rosie (Henry) Hammonds and Esther (Henry) McDavid of Gate City, Maxie (Orbin) Chapman of Ft. Blackmore and Emma McNew of Clinchport. He is also survived by five brothers: John and Walter of Kingsport, Pat and Ed of Clinchport and Will of Sunbright VA; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at the Brick Church at Rye Cove. Rev. Dale Duncan and Rev. Lester Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the McDavid Cemetery. The body will be taken to the home at 4 pm Friday from the Scott County Funeral Home.
