Enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Company B, as a Private, in Savannah, Oct 8, 1861. Promoted to 1st Sergeant. In January, 1863, the unit was merged into the 5th Georgia Cavalry, as Company F. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, June 25, 1863. He resigned, April 15, 1864. He enlisted on May 15, 1864 at Fort Barton, in Savannah. He was captured near Fayettville, NC, March 15, 1865. He was received in New Bern, NC, March 30, 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, MD. Lewis took the Oath of Allegiance, June 25, 1865 and was released, June 28, 1865. Stated on service record for this event: Residence - Screven County, Hair – Brown, Eyes – Hazle, Height – 5ft 1 inch. Incarcerated with him was his second cousin, Sidney Clopton Lanier, of Macon, Ga., the Poet.
